{"id":8334,"date":"2019-03-08T15:32:50","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T15:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/urgent-warning-over-serious-windows-7-bug\/"},"modified":"2019-03-08T15:32:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-08T15:32:50","slug":"urgent-warning-over-serious-windows-7-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/urgent-warning-over-serious-windows-7-bug\/","title":{"rendered":"Urgent warning over &#8216;serious&#8217; Windows 7 bug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Windows 7\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/11EF8\/production\/_105946437_gettyimages-92142742.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Windows 7 was released in 2009 but is still widely used<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Windows 7 users are at risk from a &#8220;serious&#8221; bug that could let malicious hackers take over their computer, <a href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2019\/03\/disclosing-vulnerabilities-to-protect.html\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Google has warned.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cyber-thieves are &#8220;actively exploiting&#8221; the vulnerability by combining it with a separate flaw found in the Chrome browser.<\/p>\n<p>Google has issued an update for its Chrome web browser to close the loophole.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has said it is also working on a fix for the problem in Windows 7.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Squashing bugs<\/h2>\n<p>The Windows flaw exists in core elements of the operating system that are supposed to stop data in one program interacting with anything outside that application. <\/p>\n<p>Google said it had seen evidence that criminal hackers had found a way to make attack code jump from Chrome into other applications to help them compromise a machine.<\/p>\n<p>A patch has been produced for Chrome and users should ensure that they have updated their browser to close the loophole, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/justinschuh\/status\/1103087046661267456\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">said Google engineer Justin Schuh.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seriously, update your Chrome installs&#8230; like right this minute,&#8221; he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>The serious nature of the flaw in Chrome meant the software had to be shut down and re-started for the patch to take effect, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To date, we have only observed active exploitation against Windows 7 32-bit systems,&#8221; wrote Clement Lecigne from Google&#8217;s threat analysis group in a blog exploring the flaw.<\/p>\n<p>One way to avoid falling victim was to upgrade to Windows 10, said Mr Lecigne.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has not given a date for when its patch for Windows 7 will be released, but said it would be &#8220;as soon as possible&#8221;.
