{"id":7990,"date":"2019-02-28T00:25:05","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T00:25:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/post-brexit-migration-rules-disastrous-say-manufacturers\/"},"modified":"2019-02-28T00:25:05","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T00:25:05","slug":"post-brexit-migration-rules-disastrous-say-manufacturers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/post-brexit-migration-rules-disastrous-say-manufacturers\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-Brexit migration rules disastrous, say manufacturers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Border control\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/169F0\/production\/_100965629_bordercontrol_getty.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Proposed new post-Brexit immigration rules will &#8220;decimate&#8221; factory workforces, the UK&#8217;s main manufacturing association has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Plans to introduce a \u00a330,000 minimum salary threshold would have &#8220;disastrous impacts&#8221;, said Make UK.<\/p>\n<p>Some 88% of skilled workers would not be receiving that level of pay, said the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Currently skilled roles such as engineering technicians are largely filled by EU nationals.<\/p>\n<p>In December the government published a White Paper on immigration proposing a \u00a330,000 salary requirement, which would apply to skilled migrants seeking five-year visas.<\/p>\n<p>Make UK said the move would cause shortages of welders, robotics workers, toolmakers and maintenance technicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Few of these roles initially pay more than the \u00a330,000 necessary under the new rules to qualify to work in the UK,&#8221; said the organisation, formerly known as the EEF.  <\/p>\n<p>Its director of employment and skills policy, Tim Thomas, urged the government to &#8220;urgently reconsider&#8221; the salary threshold plans.<\/p>\n<p>He said that as a minimum, it should &#8220;reduce the rate and offer a phased approach to any salary threshold introduction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This would &#8220;allow businesses to adapt and train a different cohort of employees&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As yet, the UK does not have the home-grown talent and expertise to fill what will soon become vacant job roles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The White Paper &#8211; a document setting out proposed new laws before they are formalised in a government bill &#8211; also includes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Scrapping the current cap on the number of skilled workers such as doctors or engineers from the EU and elsewhere<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Plans to allow lower-skilled migrants to come to the UK to work for up to a year until 2025<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Visa exemptions for visitors from the EU<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Plans to phase in the new system from 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make UK also objected to the rule change for lower-skilled migrants, saying it would hit EU jobseekers looking to fill roles such as plant and machine operators.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47389423\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Proposed new post-Brexit immigration rules will &#8220;decimate&#8221; factory workforces, the UK&#8217;s main manufacturing association has warned.
