{"id":7962,"date":"2019-02-27T09:39:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T09:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/bbc-and-itv-set-to-launch-netflix-rival\/"},"modified":"2019-02-27T09:39:13","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T09:39:13","slug":"bbc-and-itv-set-to-launch-netflix-rival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/bbc-and-itv-set-to-launch-netflix-rival\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC and ITV set to launch Netflix rival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Idris Elba\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/5D49\/production\/_105818832_mediaitem105818830.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The BBC, home to crime drama Luther, and ITV, maker of Love Island and I&#8217;m A Celebrity, are in the &#8220;concluding phase of talks&#8221; to create a rival to Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s director general Tony Hall said the aim was to launch the &#8220;BritBox&#8221; rival to Netflix in the UK the second half of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came as ITV reported 2018 profits of \u00a3567m, up 13%.<\/p>\n<p>ITV&#8217;s chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said it was an &#8220;uncertain economic and political environment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said the &#8220;BritBox&#8221; rival to Netflix will be the home for the &#8220;best of British creativity&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Neither organisation would say how the services would be priced, but Lord Hall said it would be &#8220;competitive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There are reports it could cost \u00a35 a month.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-45579665\" class=\"story-body__link\">Bodyguard: How come ITV sold the BBC hit to Netflix?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-46923792\" class=\"story-body__link\">Netflix and the race for eyeballs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The two organisations already have a BritBox streaming service in North America which Lord Hall said was &#8220;ahead of expectations&#8221;. It has 500,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Research with the British public shows that there is a real appetite for a new British streaming service &#8211; in addition to their current subscriptions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Carolyn told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today Programme that 43% of all homes which use the Internet are interested in a subscription. For homes which already subscribe to Netflix, she said that increased to half of all homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a window of opportunity here,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>ITV will spend \u00a325m on the venture this year and \u00a340m in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>The new venture is not intended to replace the BBC&#8217;s iPlayer or the ITV Hub and is expected to have box sets from the BBC and  ITV archives with some new commissions.<\/p>\n<p>There will be &#8220;one permanent, comprehensive home where anyone in Britain can get all of our library content &#8211; both the ITV and BBC library &#8211; in one place and they can watch it anytime, anywhere,&#8221; she told Today.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Carolyn told the BBC that existing licensing agreements with Netflix will be honoured.
