{"id":7713,"date":"2019-02-20T09:37:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T09:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/cyber-thieves-set-sights-on-hijacking-payment-data\/"},"modified":"2019-02-20T09:37:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T09:37:09","slug":"cyber-thieves-set-sights-on-hijacking-payment-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/cyber-thieves-set-sights-on-hijacking-payment-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-thieves set sights on hijacking payment data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"A BA plane\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/ADA9\/production\/_103375444_gettyimages-1026898284.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    BA customers were caught out by an attack that sought to steal payment card information<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Thousands of websites are being hit by cyber-thieves who implant code to scoop up payment card numbers, research suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Security giant Symantec found more than 4,800 websites were being hit by these &#8220;form-jacking&#8221; attacks every month.<\/p>\n<p>High-profile victims of these attacks include airline BA and Ticketmaster. <\/p>\n<p>Online crime groups had turned to the attacks as other more established techniques proved less and less lucrative, Symantec said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Attack code&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a sign we&#8217;re in a world where security is tighter and tighter and it&#8217;s getting harder to carry out this type of activity,&#8221; said Orla Cox, director of Symantec&#8217;s security response unit.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly profitable ventures involving ransomware and mining crypto-currencies now made gangs much less money, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they were now inserting &#8220;attack code&#8221;, either when sites failed to update core software to close loopholes or via insecure third-party apps, such as chat apps, analytics packages or other extras.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a tiny line of code in there and that&#8217;s enough for attackers to monitor payment card info being entered and they siphon it off,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its often not obvious that the website has been compromised. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To the naked eye everything would look fine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Make money<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, Symantec had stopped more than 3.7 million form-jacking attacks, said Ms Cox, adding that the figure was a measure of the technique&#8217;s sudden popularity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cyber-criminals are continuing to find new ways to make money,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And when they do, they pile in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware was also still widely used, said Ms Cox, but better back-up practices by businesses and home users meant it was harder for criminals to secure a payday.
