{"id":7605,"date":"2019-02-17T04:22:31","date_gmt":"2019-02-17T04:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/pension-contribution-hike-to-hit-pay-packets\/"},"modified":"2019-02-17T04:22:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T04:22:31","slug":"pension-contribution-hike-to-hit-pay-packets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/pension-contribution-hike-to-hit-pay-packets\/","title":{"rendered":"Pension contribution hike to hit pay packets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Cash and cards\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/5133\/production\/_105678702_6d09b9f6-6ebd-4d3d-9e7b-40993c4bb8d7.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Workers with auto-enrolment pensions will contribute 5% of their salary from April<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Millions of workers could see their take-home pay fall in six weeks&#8217; time when the amount they have to pay into their pension pot increases.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis for the BBC has examined how pay will be hit when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43429033\" class=\"story-body__link\">higher contribution rates for those with auto-enrolment pensions<\/a> kick in.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, 10 million eligible workers have been automatically signed up to workplace pensions.<\/p>\n<p>From April, their contribution will rise from 3% of their salary to 5%.<\/p>\n<p>Tom McPhail, head of policy at the investment company Hargreaves Lansdown, said: &#8220;This is quite a significant increase relative to what they&#8217;ve been paying to date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is going to affect up to 10 million people who&#8217;ve been auto-enrolled in the past few years, so the potential impact of this change is quite substantial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The analysis carried out for the BBC by Hargreaves Lansdown suggests the annual take-home pay of someone earning \u00a315,000 will typically be \u00a349 lower, if they pay contributions on their entire salary.<\/p>\n<p>Someone on \u00a330,000 will take home \u00a3253 less according to the calculations.<\/p>\n<p>The hit to net pay could have been bigger but a tax cut for most earners will soften the blow of higher auto-enrolment contributions.<\/p>\n<p>The personal allowance is due to increase to \u00a312,500 from April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Auto-enrolmaggedon&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some in the industry worry lower take-home pay could lead people to opt out of saving for a pension.<\/p>\n<p>The change coincides with uncertainty in the economy, leading some to dub the move &#8220;auto-enrolmageddon&#8221;, although the industry is not expecting a big jump in opt-outs.<\/p>\n<p>The government says it will closely monitor what happens.<\/p>\n<p>The rate of people stopping saving into a workplace pension was just 0.7% in the three months following the first increase in contribution rates in April 2018, compared with 0.6% for the previous four years.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on a recent visit to this electronics factory, Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, told the BBC: &#8220;I&#8217;m hopeful it won&#8217;t have an impact because we need to encourage people to save more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Addressing last year&#8217;s contribution increase, she said: &#8220;Some people were nervous we would see saving drop off.
