{"id":7400,"date":"2019-02-11T16:21:25","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T16:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/food-industry-warns-gove-on-brexit-crisis\/"},"modified":"2019-02-11T16:21:25","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T16:21:25","slug":"food-industry-warns-gove-on-brexit-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/food-industry-warns-gove-on-brexit-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Food industry warns Gove on Brexit &#8216;crisis&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Combine harvester on farm in Lincolnshire\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/A279\/production\/_105039514_gettyimages-1061398846.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The UK food industry has threatened to stop co-operating with government policy consultations, saying it is busy trying to stave off the &#8220;catastrophic impact&#8221; of a no-deal Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The warning came in a letter to Environment Secretary Michael Gove from more than 30 business leaders.<\/p>\n<p>They said it looked &#8220;ever more the likeliest outcome&#8221; that the UK would leave the EU without an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>They added that it was a &#8220;moment of potential crisis&#8221; for their industry.<\/p>\n<p>Those signing the letter included the heads of the Food and Drink Federation, the National Farmers&#8217; Union and UK Hospitality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Neither we nor our members have the physical resources nor organisational bandwidth to engage with and properly respond to non-Brexit related policy consultations or initiatives at this time,&#8221; they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Government has recruited many extra staff; we cannot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The firms urge the government to place a range of current and planned industry consultations on &#8220;pause&#8221; until the Brexit uncertainty is over.<\/p>\n<p>The consultations the firms cite include one relating to further curbs on the advertising of sugary foods, a national recycling collection strategy and proposals for a tax on plastic items with less than 30% recycled content.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/delay-reforms-amid-brexit-crisis-food-bosses-tell-gove-11634412\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">first reported by Sky,<\/a> is further evidence of the industry&#8217;s frustration at the continuing lack of certainty over the Brexit process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Businesses throughout the UK food chain &#8211; and their trade associations &#8211; are now totally focused on working to mitigate the catastrophic impact of a no-deal Brexit,&#8221; says the letter, which was sent last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Large amounts of time, money, people and effort are being diverted to that end.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The letter comes just two weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47028748\" class=\"story-body__link\">after major retailers warned MPs<\/a> that a no-deal Brexit would cause huge disruption to the industry, leading to higher prices and empty shelves in the short-term. <\/p>\n<p>Sainsbury&#8217;s, Asda and McDonald&#8217;s were among those who warned stockpiling fresh food was impossible, and that the UK was very reliant on the EU for produce.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47200688\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images The UK food industry has threatened to stop co-operating with government policy consultations, saying it is busy trying to stave off the &#8220;catastrophic impact&#8221; of a no-deal Brexit.
