And many face the constant uncertainty of not knowing when their next shift will come,&#8221; she added. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Flexibility or insecurity?<\/h2>\n<p>The TUC&#8217;s research is likely to reignite the debate over zero-hour contracts.<\/p>\n<p>While the casual employment contracts don&#8217;t oblige employers to provide a minimum number of working hours, they don&#8217;t oblige employees to accept any of the hours offered by their employer either.<\/p>\n<p>Workers on zero-hours contracts are still entitled to statutory annual leave and the national minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>Although such contracts have been controversial, many say they provide flexibility to people such as students, parents and those with other caring responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>But critics say that zero-hours contracts create insecurity for workers and are used by employers to undercut wages and avoid holiday pay and pension contributions.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46793506\" class=\"story-body__link\">Why so many young workers have \u2018side hustles\u2019<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-47149646\" class=\"story-body__link\">Corbyn promises pay rise for the low-paid<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The TUC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/news\/two-thirds-zero-hours-workers-want-jobs-guaranteed-hours-tuc-polling-reveals\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">says its research suggests<\/a> two-thirds of zero-hours workers would prefer jobs with guaranteed hours.<\/p>\n<p>The research also suggests:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">The median hourly pay before tax for someone on a zero-hour contract was \u00a37.70 compared to \u00a311.80 for other workers <\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">It found 23% of zero-hour contracts have night work as a usual part of their working pattern, compared to 11% of other workers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The union&#8217;s research was based on analysing the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/datasets\/emp17peopleinemploymentonzerohourscontracts\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">official data on zero-hours contracts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows there are around 780,000 on such contracts, equivalent to 2.4% of the working population.<\/p>\n<p>People on such contracts are more likely to fall into one or more of four categories &#8211; young, part-time, women or in full-time education. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47193809\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images People on zero-hour contracts are more than twice as likely to work night shifts, and are paid a third less an hour than other workers, the TUC says.
