across Edinburgh, including hotels, B&amp;Bs, short-term lets and hostels.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Edinburgh sees a huge surge of visitors every summer for its festivals<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Visitors staying in campsites would be exempt.<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish government had been firmly against allowing councils to set a tourist tax, but First Minister Nicola Sturgeon signalled a change in direction last year when she said there should be further consultation.<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s decision was welcomed by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce but they appealed for more information about how the money will be spent. <\/p>\n<p>Its CEO, Liz McAreavey, said: &#8220;After consulting our members, we found broad support for the principle of a transient visitor levy, support which increases further if funds were ring-fenced and re-invested entirely in the city&#8217;s infrastructure. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we require now is some more detailed information from City of Edinburgh Council as to exactly what they propose to do with the funds raised via a TVL.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last month a deal with the Scottish Greens on the budget bill included an agreement to &#8220;consult, in 2019, on the principles of a locally determined tourist tax, prior to introducing legislation to permit local authorities to introduce a transient visitor levy&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh would follow in the footsteps of European cities such as Paris and Barcelona, while Bath and Oxford councils have also called for powers to charge visitors.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-47157011\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright OLI SCARFF Councillors in Edinburgh have voted in favour of a &#8220;tourist tax&#8221;, which could become the first of its kind in the UK.
