{"id":7230,"date":"2019-02-07T11:48:31","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T11:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/online-gambling-checks-to-be-strengthened\/"},"modified":"2019-02-07T11:48:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T11:48:31","slug":"online-gambling-checks-to-be-strengthened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/online-gambling-checks-to-be-strengthened\/","title":{"rendered":"Online gambling checks to be strengthened"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Mobile phone with gambling site\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/E65E\/production\/_105547985_91b467fa-8f62-4e3d-8a9a-df0302158a41.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Gambling Commission is bringing in new rules for online gaming firms to try to make gambling safer and fairer.<\/p>\n<p>Operators will need to confirm customers&#8217; age and identity faster than the 72 hours previously allowed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk\/news-action-and-statistics\/news\/2019\/New-rules-to-make-online-gambling-in-Britain-fairer-and-safer.aspx\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">The Commission says<\/a> that will help stop problem gamblers circumventing exclusion systems, as well as further limit the risk of children gambling. <\/p>\n<p>It says operators will need to verify a customer&#8217;s details before they can either deposit funds or gamble.<\/p>\n<p>This would also prevent any unverified customer gambling with a free bet or bonus. <\/p>\n<p>The new rules come into force on 7 May.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-46830810\" class=\"story-body__link\">a BBC 5 Live investigation reported &#8220;deep concerns&#8221;<\/a> about the way GamStop, the system set up to help problem gamblers, was working. <\/p>\n<p>GamStop allows addicts to ban themselves from online betting platforms.<\/p>\n<p>But the BBC found that a gambler who had self-referred could still place bets online by simply changing their user details. <\/p>\n<p>Late last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46382717\" class=\"story-body__link\">three online casino companies were given penalties of \u00a314m<\/a> and one prevented from operating in the UK after the Gambling Commission found they had not made sufficient checks on customers. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Improved accuracy<\/h2>\n<p>The new rules are also designed to make collecting winnings fairer. <\/p>\n<p>In March 2018, the Commission announced that some online operators were treating customers unfairly by requesting additional identity information when the customer attempted to withdraw winnings. <\/p>\n<p>Around 15% of complaints to its contact centre were about licensees not allowing a customer to withdraw funds until they submit certain forms of ID.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission&#8217;s new rules also require that online gaming companies take reasonable steps to make sure information on their customers&#8217; identities remains accurate. <\/p>\n<p>It says the changes will also help operators to prevent harm or detect criminal activity because they will have more information about their customers. <\/p>\n<p>Neil McArthur, Gambling Commission chief executive, said: &#8220;These changes will protect children and the vulnerable from gambling-related harm, and reduce the risk of crime linked to gambling.
