and &#8220;entrenched&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He has also pushed the bank to reduce its lending to China, which he says is too wealthy to deserve such aid, and deploys harsh practices when lending to other countries.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47137298\" class=\"story-body__link\">Who is Trump&#8217;s World Bank pick Malpass?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\"\/>\n<p>An American has led the World Bank since its start in the 1940s, when it was created to help rebuild Europe in the aftermath of World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The US, the bank&#8217;s largest shareholder and a major source of its funding, has traditionally held sway over the selection process for president. <\/p>\n<p>However, there has been increased pressure to diversify the bank&#8217;s leadership, reflecting the economic rise of other countries in recent decades.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Counting the votes<\/h2>\n<p>It is not clear if other countries will propose alternatives to challenge Mr Malpass.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank, which has 189 members, is accepting names until 14 March and plans to create a shortlist of up to three candidates for interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Its executive board plans to vote on candidates for the post of president before its April meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The US controls 16% of the 25-member executive board&#8217;s voting power. <\/p>\n<p>European shareholders, who control another significant chunk of voting power, are also unlikely to block the pick, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Real reform&#8217;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    The World Bank helped to fund repairs of the Kariba Dam<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>White House officials said Mr Malpass would champion &#8220;pro-growth&#8221; policies, emphasising the role of the private sector, increased lending transparency and more &#8220;competitive&#8221; tax systems.<\/p>\n<p>He will also oversee implementation of reforms the US pushed last year, which coupled an increase in money for the bank with changes aimed at reducing lending to China.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Mr Malpass&#8217;s nomination did not signal a lack of support for the bank, which helps finance development projects with loans, credits and grants, committing more than $60bn (\u00a346.3bn) in its most recent financial year,  <\/p>\n<p>However, they said the administration did want to see changes to make it more effective.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes that does require real reform and modernising ways of doing business,&#8221;
