{"id":7094,"date":"2019-02-04T05:29:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T05:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/hermes-to-offer-pay-benefits-to-couriers-in-union-deal\/"},"modified":"2019-02-04T05:29:14","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T05:29:14","slug":"hermes-to-offer-pay-benefits-to-couriers-in-union-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/hermes-to-offer-pay-benefits-to-couriers-in-union-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Hermes to offer pay benefits to couriers in union deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Hermes courier\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/7DA6\/production\/_105466123_hermes.png\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Hermes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Hermes, the parcel delivery firm, has struck an agreement with the GMB union to offer couriers paid holiday and guaranteed wage rates under its new &#8220;self-employed plus&#8221; status.<\/p>\n<p>In what the GMB called a &#8220;ground-breaking&#8221; deal for the gig economy, Hermes workers can opt-in to receive up to 28 days of paid leave.<\/p>\n<p>They can also choose pay rates of &#8220;at least&#8221; \u00a38.50 a hour over the year.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, couriers will have to follow routes specified by Hermes.<\/p>\n<p>At present, Hermes&#8217;s 15,000 couriers can deliver parcels in whichever order they want. <\/p>\n<p>The company said that if it is guaranteeing hourly rates of pay, it needs ensure that couriers are taking the most efficient route. <\/p>\n<p>The GMB said that the collective bargaining agreement is on an opt-in basis and &#8220;will not affect those couriers who wish to retain their current form of self-employed status and earn premium rates&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Martijn de Lange, chief executive of Hermes UK, said: &#8220;We have listened to our couriers and are wholeheartedly committed to offering innovative ways of working to meet peoples&#8217; differing needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The so-called gig economy means that people are paid for the &#8220;gigs&#8221; they do such as delivering a parcel or a car journey.<\/p>\n<p>However, some workers are pushing companies to offer better conditions such as paid leave and the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Take notice&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>In December, Uber, the ride-sharing service, lost an appeal against a ruling in 2016 which said drivers James Farrar and Yaseen Aslam were entitled to benefits. <\/p>\n<p>Uber said it would appeal to the Supreme Court. <\/p>\n<p>Tim Roache, general secretary of the GMB, said: &#8220;Full credit to Hermes.
