{"id":6974,"date":"2019-02-01T01:40:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T01:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/dont-turn-a-blind-eye-to-hand-car-wash-exploitation-say-mps\/"},"modified":"2019-02-01T01:40:07","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T01:40:07","slug":"dont-turn-a-blind-eye-to-hand-car-wash-exploitation-say-mps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/dont-turn-a-blind-eye-to-hand-car-wash-exploitation-say-mps\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t turn a blind eye to hand car wash exploitation, say MPs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Washing a car\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/1232C\/production\/_86604547_86604544.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Justin Sullivan\/Getty<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The government has been urged to &#8220;not turn a blind eye to&#8221; the exploitation of workers in hand car washes.<\/p>\n<p>The plea came after the government rejected a call for a trial licensing scheme to try to tackle the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Audit Committee said it had found &#8220;widespread and alarming breaches&#8221; of employment and environmental laws at hand car washes. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is disappointing that the ministers have opted for a pilot approach that is voluntary,&#8221; EAC chair Mary Creagh said.<\/p>\n<p>The government accepted two of the EAC&#8217;s recommendations from its report which found that cheap hand car washes exploit workers and damage the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers agreed to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Write to major supermarkets to remind them of their environmental duties when disposing of dirty water<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Update the pollution prevention guidance on the government website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cheap hand car washes now account for 80% of the sector in the UK. <\/p>\n<p>They have grown rapidly over the past 15 years, and are often in car parks and disused forecourts.  <\/p>\n<p>MPs said 27% of cases recorded by the Modern Slavery Helpline in 2017 about labour exploitation, concerned car wash workers.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Frazer, managing director of Car Wash Advisory Services (CWAS), which represents a range of car wash businesses, told the BBC she was &#8220;really disappointed&#8221; by the government&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>CWAS operates a &#8220;Wash Mark&#8221; scheme to denote a company which is meeting required standards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We visit every site, that&#8217;s the only way we are ever able to stamp out issues,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The government&#8217;s voluntary scheme would rely on firms to self report on how they were performing, which she believed would be ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>Industry body The Car Wash Association said up to 20,000 &#8220;rogue hand car washes&#8221; were believed to be operating in the UK.   <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are being given words of reassurance, but what we need is firm action against the modern slave owners who evade taxes and exploit vulnerable workers,&#8221; said chair Brian Madderson.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47083010\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Justin Sullivan\/Getty The government has been urged to &#8220;not turn a blind eye to&#8221; the exploitation of workers in hand car washes.
