{"id":6956,"date":"2019-01-31T15:22:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/brexit-unilever-stockpiles-ben-jerrys-and-magnum-ice-creams\/"},"modified":"2019-01-31T15:22:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:22:13","slug":"brexit-unilever-stockpiles-ben-jerrys-and-magnum-ice-creams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/brexit-unilever-stockpiles-ben-jerrys-and-magnum-ice-creams\/","title":{"rendered":"Brexit: Unilever stockpiles Ben &#038; Jerry&#8217;s and Magnum ice creams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Magnum ice cream\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/17373\/production\/_105419059_magnum_getty.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Unilever has said it is stockpiling Ben and Jerry&#8217;s ice cream and Magnum bars ahead of the UK&#8217;s departure from the European Union. <\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Alan Jope said the consumer goods giant was holding a few weeks&#8217; worth of extra stock in case of disruption to supply chains. <\/p>\n<p>It follows admissions of Brexit stockpiling from other firms. <\/p>\n<p>The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March but concern is mounting it will exit without a deal. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47028748\" class=\"story-body__link\">No-deal Brexit &#8216;to leave shelves empty&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47063405\" class=\"story-body__link\">How has business been affected by Brexit?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mr Jope said Unilever was also stockpiling deodorant in mainland Europe in case of Brexit-related delays. <\/p>\n<p>The firm&#8217;s Leeds factory, which makes Sure, Lynx and Dove, supplies the whole of Europe, while its ice creams are produced on the continent. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Jope added that the firm was building up stocks of the materials used to package goods. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have built inventory on either side of the Channel,&#8221; Mr Jope said. &#8220;It&#8217;s weeks of inventory &#8211; not months or days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I was in the designer handbag business then I might have built further [inventory] cover but we&#8217;re not, we are in fast-moving consumer goods and one of the things we have learned is, when you build inventory, it can end up being the wrong mix of product.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Tariff fears<\/h2>\n<p>A number of companies have been stockpiling goods ahead of Brexit, including car-parts maker Robert Bosch, luxury goods firm LVMH and French drugmaker Novartis. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Sainsbury&#8217;s, Asda and McDonald&#8217;s warned that stockpiling fresh food was impossible &#8211; and that a no-deal Brexit would leave them short of stock.<\/p>\n<p>But the government said it has &#8220;well established&#8221; ways of working with industry to prevent disruption.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jope, who succeeded Paul Polman as Unilever&#8217;s chief executive in November, said the company was preparing for various Brexit scenarios but that a no-deal outcome would be the hardest to manage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We desperately hope that we don&#8217;t end up in a tariff-laden environment,&#8221; he said.   <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47071874\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Unilever has said it is stockpiling Ben and Jerry&#8217;s ice cream and Magnum bars ahead of the UK&#8217;s departure from the European Union.
