{"id":6949,"date":"2019-01-31T11:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T11:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/italy-in-recession-amid-sluggish-eurozone\/"},"modified":"2019-01-31T11:17:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T11:17:24","slug":"italy-in-recession-amid-sluggish-eurozone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/italy-in-recession-amid-sluggish-eurozone\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy in recession amid sluggish eurozone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Fiat factory\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/6EFB\/production\/_105411482_fiatfactory_getty.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Italy&#8217;s economy tipped into recession at the end of last year, according to latest figures.<\/p>\n<p>In the final three months of 2018, the economy shrank by 0.2%, following a 0.1% decline in the third quarter, the Istat statistics office said.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the contraction was likely to continue into 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, figures from the EU showed economic growth in the 19-country eurozone still languishing.<\/p>\n<p>Growth in the euro area remained at 0.2% in the final quarter of 2018, the same as the previous quarter and in line with analysts&#8217; expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The figures, issued by the Eurostat agency, showed that in the 28-nation EU as a whole, fourth-quarter growth was 0.3%.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Debt woes<\/h2>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s statistics office said agriculture, forestry, fishing and industry had all contributed to the economic downturn, while a rise in net exports failed to offset those declines.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s coalition government was forced to revise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-46710472\" class=\"story-body__link\">its expansionary 2019 budget<\/a> last month after the European Commission raised concerns about the impact on the country&#8217;s debt levels.<\/p>\n<p>Italy has the biggest government debt in the EU at more than \u20ac2.3 trillion ($2.6tn; \u00a32tn).
