HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed some of the &#8220;outlandish&#8221; reasons they heard last year:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">My mother-in-law is a witch and put a curse on me<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">I&#8217;m too short to reach the post box<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">I was just too busy &#8211; my first maid left, my second maid stole from me, and my third maid was very slow to learn<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Our junior member of staff registered our client in self assessment by mistake because they were not wearing their glasses<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">My boiler had broken and my fingers were too cold to type<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">HMRC<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    HMRC has been running an awareness campaign<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>HMRC said it would provide help for those who had a genuine excuse for not submitting their return on time. <\/p>\n<p>Those could include the death of a partner or family member, serious illness, fire, flood or theft, computer failure or issues with HMRC online services.<\/p>\n<p>But as the deadline for 2017\/18 tax returns fast approaches, some people just can&#8217;t help leaving it until the pressure is really on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"social-embed\">\n<div class=\"social-embed-post social-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"embed embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"embed-region\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Twitter post by @CraigPaton\">\n            <a class=\"off-screen jump-link\" href=\"#jump-linkhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/CraigPaton\/status\/1090636719102279681\">Skip Twitter post  by @CraigPaton<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The HMRC should have a prize for those who fill out their tax returns with the least amount of time to spare before the deadline. Putting your phone on airplane mode or going somewhere to work where you won&#8217;t be disturbed will also help<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Being &#8220;busy&#8221; is easier than doing the thing we are avoiding. Instead of doing the task at hand, we do other stuff instead and kid ourselves that we don&#8217;t have the time. You do have the time.
