{"id":6649,"date":"2019-01-24T00:06:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T00:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/daily-mail-demands-browser-warning-u-turn\/"},"modified":"2019-01-24T00:06:47","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T00:06:47","slug":"daily-mail-demands-browser-warning-u-turn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/daily-mail-demands-browser-warning-u-turn\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Mail demands browser warning U-turn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"NewsGuard warning about Daily Mail\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/16F3B\/production\/_105311049_e05b17c1-8c03-4d7e-af87-6cac4eaf2b18.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Daily Mail<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Daily Mail is calling for a web browser alert that criticises its journalism to be changed.<\/p>\n<p>The NewsGuard plug-in currently brings up a warning that says the newspaper&#8217;s website &#8220;generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It has given this advice since August.<\/p>\n<p>But the matter came to prominence last week, after Microsoft updated its Edge browser app for Android and iOS devices and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsguardtech.com\/press\/newsguard-now-available-on-microsoft-edge-mobile-apps-for-ios-and-android\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">built in NewsGuard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2019\/jan\/23\/dont-trust-daily-mail-website-microsoft-browser-warns-users\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">prompted several<\/a> other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2019\/01\/23\/microsoft-wards-web-surfers-away-daily-mail-fake-news-fight\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">media outlets<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/breakingnews\/world\/users-of-microsoft-edge-browser-warned-not-to-trust-the-daily-mail-website-899505.html\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">report the story.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have only very recently become aware of the NewsGuard start-up and are in discussions with them to have this egregiously erroneous classification resolved as soon as possible,&#8221; said a spokesman for Mail Online.<\/p>\n<p>At present, NewsGuard must be switched on by users of Microsoft&#8217;s Edge app, but the BBC understands there are plans for it to become the default option in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The New York-based service &#8211; which is independent of Microsoft &#8211; also has ambitions to include its tool in further products from the Windows developer as well as other tech firms. <\/p>\n<p>But for now, it can be used as an add-on extension in the desktop version of web browsers including Edge, Google&#8217;s Chrome, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox and Apple&#8217;s Safari.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Negative rating&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft declined to comment on the dispute and referred the BBC to NewsGuard&#8217;s developers.<\/p>\n<p>They said they had already tried to engage with the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our journalist analysts always contact websites if they get a negative rating on any of our nine journalistic criteria.
