{"id":5921,"date":"2019-01-02T09:52:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T09:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/grayling-defends-no-deal-brexit-ferry-contract\/"},"modified":"2019-01-02T09:52:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T09:52:13","slug":"grayling-defends-no-deal-brexit-ferry-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/grayling-defends-no-deal-brexit-ferry-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Grayling defends no-deal Brexit ferry contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Transport Secretary Chris Grayling\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/A413\/production\/_105030024_gettyimages-1065431144.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has defended the government&#8217;s choice of a UK company with no ships as one of the providers of extra ferry services in the event of a no-deal Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Grayling told the BBC he would make no apologies for &#8220;supporting a new British business&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The firm, Seaborne Freight, won a \u00a313.8m contract to run a freight service between Ramsgate and Ostend. <\/p>\n<p>But a BBC investigation discovered it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46714984\" class=\"story-body__link\">had never run a ferry service before.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Grayling told the Today programme that the government had &#8220;looked very carefully&#8221; at the business. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have put in place a tight contract to make sure they can deliver for us,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n<p>On the future of cross-Channel operations, Mr Grayling said that he had &#8220;had detailed discussions with the French, with French counterparts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They want to keep the Channel ports operating freely and I am confident that will happen,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Department for Transport confirmed that Seaborne Freight would only be paid if it ran &#8220;an effective service&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The contract is one of three recently awarded to provide additional ferries between the UK and several European cities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46704522\" class=\"story-body__link\">Other suppliers<\/a> include France&#8217;s Brittany Ferries and Danish shipping firm DFDS.<\/p>\n<p>The extra services are aimed to ease congestion at Dover if the UK leaves the EU without striking an exit deal with Brussels.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46735303\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has defended the government&#8217;s choice of a UK company with no ships as one of the providers of extra ferry services in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
