{"id":5675,"date":"2018-12-20T17:26:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T17:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/is-the-tradition-of-christmas-tipping-still-going-strong\/"},"modified":"2018-12-20T17:26:18","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T17:26:18","slug":"is-the-tradition-of-christmas-tipping-still-going-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/is-the-tradition-of-christmas-tipping-still-going-strong\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the tradition of Christmas tipping still going strong?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"A Royal Mail postal worker in the snow\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/FA12\/production\/_104881046_bgr70j.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Alamy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">To some, slipping a note or two into the hands of the postie or the refuse collector at Christmas time is second nature.<\/p>\n<p>But others have never heard of it. <\/p>\n<p>The tradition of the &#8220;Christmas box&#8221; sees people give cash or small gifts to those who perform personal services in their lives &#8211; be it the person delivering the milk or post, cleaners or hairdressers.<\/p>\n<p>And some can take home a decent haul.<\/p>\n<p>Modern manners specialists Debrett&#8217;s suggest giving a \u00a35 tip to those delivering goods to your door, along with those taking rubbish away.<\/p>\n<p>But in the days where people rarely see their refuse collector, don&#8217;t know their postie and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46596154\" class=\"story-body__link\">carry less cash<\/a>, is the tradition dying out?<\/p>\n<p>Jason King and his dad Neil have worked as postal workers for more than 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>Last year Jason says he made \u00a3350 from tips, which he puts down to knowing his customers, and never leaving a package undelivered.<\/p>\n<p>But more experienced dad Neil brought home a haul of \u00a3600, plus around 50 bottles of wine and a huge stash of chocolates.<\/p>\n<p>Neil has a special technique to help his customers embrace the season of goodwill: he delivers post dressed up as Santa.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Jason King<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Postie Neil King, left, made \u00a3600 in Christmas tips last year<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the run up to Christmas, he and his colleague, who dresses as an elf, embark on festive deliveries around their patch in a Cambridgeshire village.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids love it, the mums and dads spend a bit of a time saying hello,&#8221; Jason says.<\/p>\n<p>Jason said he&#8217;s only gone as far as sporting a Christmas jumper, but is tempted to follow his father&#8217;s footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout December, their sorting office is awash with gossip of colleagues&#8217; Christmas tips totals.<\/p>\n<p>But he says &#8220;it&#8217;s not a competition&#8221; and that those who deliver to villages tend to do better than those in towns, since they know their customers better.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-england-berkshire-46622762\/behind-the-scenes-royal-mail-s-busiest-week\" class=\"story-body__link\">WATCH: Royal Mail&#8217;s busiest week<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite his postal worker credentials Jason admits: &#8220;If I wasn&#8217;t a postman, I wouldn&#8217;t think of tipping the postman. It wouldn&#8217;t occur to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would never tip my postman!&#8221; he laughs.<\/p>\n<p>He isn&#8217;t the only one who doesn&#8217;t think about festive tipping nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>A recent survey of 2,000 people by British Corner Shop found only 8% of 25-34 year olds said they&#8217;d tip their postal worker and refuse collector at Christmas, versus 20% of over 55 year olds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;My milkman is the supermarket&#8217; <\/h2>\n<p>Rachel Waterman, 44, from Northwich, Cheshire, hasn&#8217;t carried on her parents&#8217; tradition of Christmas tipping.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My parents gave &#8216;Christmas boxes&#8217;,&#8221; she says. &#8220;They gave the postman, the binman, and the milkman a bit of money to say thank you for doing your job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But she says times have changed, and services have become far less personal: &#8220;Now the postman doesn&#8217;t come until halfway through the day &#8211; I&#8217;m at work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mum and dad knew the postman, they knew them by name.
