to British culture.<\/p>\n<p>Crimean War nurse Mary Seacole is among their suggested candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Another is wartime secret agent Noor Inayat Khan, the first female radio operator sent into Nazi-occupied France.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-20240693\" class=\"story-body__link\">The Indian royal who became a spy<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 200 people, including Lord Victor Adebowale and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, signed the letter published in the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not lack candidates, and arguably their achievements were the greater for having been made at a time when many careers and were effectively closed to them, whether through colonial rules, racism, or the legacy of slavery,&#8221; despite BAME communities representing &#8220;14% of the British population&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Changing this would send a message that the contribution of ethnic minorities to Britain&#8217;s history, culture and economy is recognised and valued,&#8221; it reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What better representation of &#8216;global Britain&#8217; could there be?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Late last month the Bank said it had received 174,112 nominations for the \u00a350 portrait in less than four weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/-\/media\/boe\/files\/banknotes\/50-character-selection-names.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=F0CCA0655EEC2788748D885BE036662B574B615E\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">It released a list<\/a> of more than 800 eligible nominees, including Seacole along with computing pioneers Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace, telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell and Stephen Hawking.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible, the individual must be real, deceased and have contributed to any field of science in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The final full list is yet to be released; were recognised for their contribution to British society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now more than ever, we need to celebrate the rich diversity of UK society: representation on bank notes is a great way to do this,&#8221;
