Is that not something you could track?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added that when she had tried to actively discourage the technology companies from showing her the pregnancy-related promotions, they had misinterpreted her response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we&#8230; click &#8216;I don&#8217;t want to see this ad,&#8217; and even answer your &#8216;Why?&#8217; with the cruel-but-true &#8216;It&#8217;s not relevant to me,&#8217; do you know what your algorithm decides?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It decides you&#8217;ve given birth, assumes a happy result, and deluges you with ads for the best nursing bras&#8230; tricks to get the baby to sleep through the night&#8230; and the best strollers to grow with your baby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then, after all that, Experian swoops in with the lowest tracking blow of them all: a spam email encouraging me to &#8216;finish registering your baby&#8217; (I never &#8216;started&#8217; but sure) to track his credit throughout the life he will never lead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Working on it&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s advertising chief, Rob Goldman, has been the first of the executives responsible to respond.<\/p>\n<p>He apologised for Ms Brockell&#8217;s experience but noted that the platform&#8217;s settings included an option to block ads about topics the user might find painful, including parenting.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Facebook&#8217;s settings let users ask for parenting ads to be blocked<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It still needs improvement, but please know that we&#8217;re working on it,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robjective\/status\/1072705860919472129\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">he added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Brockell thanked him for his reply but said the solution was not ideal.<\/p>\n<p>Other users have reported that Facebook&#8217;s Hide Ad Topics setting does not always have the desired effect.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, an English mother of a stillborn girl <a href=\"https:\/\/stillnothere.com\/2018\/10\/09\/the-journey-begins\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">wrote an open letter to the social network<\/a> after she told it to hide parenting ads as well as anything related to babies, family and the home.<\/p>\n<p>She said she had still been targeted with baby-related products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your ads were unintentionally taunting me with reminders of what I&#8217;d lost,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"player-with-placeholder\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-placeholder player-with-placeholder__image narrative-video-placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p06p52j3.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Media playback is unsupported on your device<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"media-with-caption__caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Media caption<\/span>&#8216;Facebook baby ads taunted me after stillborn&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Facebook told the BBC this had been caused by a bug in its system that had since been fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter has also issued a brief statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot imagine the pain of those who who have experienced this type of loss,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are continuously working on improving our advertising products to ensure they serve appropriate content to the people who use our services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BBC understands Experian plans to comment later after it has spoken directly to Ms Brockell.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-46543324\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Facebook Image caption Ms Brockell said many other bereaved parents had contacted her to tell of similar experiences The mother of a stillborn child has called on tech companies to rethink how they target ads after she was inundated with baby-related promotions.
