in Myanmar, also known as Burma.<\/p>\n<p>But he added that the trip had been &#8220;purely personal&#8221; and had focused only on his meditation practice. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Twitter<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mr Dorsey said he had been asked by Twitter users to explain what the social media company was doing about the crisis in Myanmar. <\/p>\n<p>He tweeted Twitter was a way for people to &#8220;bear witness to the plight of the Rohingya and other peoples and communities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re actively working to address emerging issues,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Birthday retreat<\/h2>\n<p>Mr Dorsey had previously posted tweets about a vipassana meditation retreat he had taken to celebrate his birthday. <\/p>\n<p>Vipassana is a Buddhist meditation method said to provide practitioners with greater insight into their inner selves.<\/p>\n<p>Describing Myanmar as an &#8220;absolutely beautiful country&#8221;, Mr Dorsey had encouraged any of his four million followers who were interested and willing to travel there and try it for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The UN has described Myanmar&#8217;s operation against the Rohingya as a &#8220;textbook example of ethnic cleansing&#8221; and says senior officials should be investigated and tried for genocide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-45338986\" class=\"story-body__link\">The army has previously cleared itself of all wrongdoing<\/a> and rejects the UN&#8217;s allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Criticism of Mr Dorsey&#8217;s choice of holiday destination came in quickly to the social media platform.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Twitter<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Writing what is effectively a free tourism advert for them at this time is reprehensible,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nazkebab77\/status\/1071625230295162880\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">one Twitter user wrote<\/a> in response to Mr Dorsey&#8217;s tweets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tone-deafness here is&#8230; wow,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/taniakaras\/status\/1071675007313551360\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">another user said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an extremely irresponsible recommendation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamilaHanan\/status\/1071667291857870849\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">one response reads<\/a>. &#8220;Does he pay no attention to the news and the outcry on his own platform?&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamilaHanan\/status\/1071695178614759424\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">they added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others have responded positively, with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobyharriman\/status\/1072644349404553216\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">one Twitter user writing<\/a>: &#8220;Glad you got to experience Myanmar &#8211; it&#8217;s an incredible place with even more incredible people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Off_The_Ground\/status\/1072646849058783232\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">But another wrote<\/a>: &#8220;Dude &#8211;
