{"id":5294,"date":"2018-12-10T15:22:47","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T15:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/brexit-anxiety-sends-pound-to-18-month-low\/"},"modified":"2018-12-10T15:22:47","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T15:22:47","slug":"brexit-anxiety-sends-pound-to-18-month-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/brexit-anxiety-sends-pound-to-18-month-low\/","title":{"rendered":"Brexit anxiety sends pound to 18-month low"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"stack of coins\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/F353\/production\/_104719226_poundgettyimages-860933706.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The pound has fallen to an 18-month low against the dollar amid mounting uncertainty about the terms of the UK&#8217;s exit from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>After reports that Theresa May is delaying Tuesday&#8217;s vote on her Brexit deal, the pound fell to $1.2656, its lowest level since June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The pound slipped to three-month lows against the euro, trading at \u20ac1.1085<\/p>\n<p>The currency is seen as a barometer of the Brexit negotiations, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Until the market knows what will happen with respect to Brexit one way or the other then they [traders] will remain extremely anxious,&#8221; said Jane Foley, head of foreign exchange strategy at Rabobank.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Foley said the threat of a hard Brexit, under which the UK leaves the EU without a deal, as well as the ongoing political uncertainty was &#8220;an extraordinary and toxic mix&#8221; for the pound. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once we know what is happening, things will be more settled,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Pound v dollar<\/h2>\n<p><!-- ONE DAY CHART --><\/p>\n<p>This week had always been expected to be a volatile one for the pound because of the vote on Tuesday, which has also heightened political uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Conservative MPs had been planning to join forces with Labour, the SNP, the Lib Dems and the DUP to vote down Mrs May&#8217;s deal.<\/p>\n<p>David Cheetham, chief market analyst at XTB, said that while any delay to the vote will spare the Prime Minister from a defeat, the market was reacting to the uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The negative reaction in the markets is more likely due to what it means for her position rather than the failure to win the vote &#8211; with even her staunchest supporters already highly sceptical as to whether the bill would pass &#8211; as it now seems increasingly likely that a long-touted leadership challenge will ensue,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Pound v euro<\/h2>\n<p><!-- ONE DAY CHART --><\/p>\n<p>Mrs May will now make a statement to MPs at 15:30 GMT, which has helped sparked expectations the vote will be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wilson said there were a number of theories about what delaying the might vote might mean, ranging from new talks over the backstop or a second referendum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only known is that the uncertainty has increased and we are faced with more volatility for sterling and UK assets,&#8221; Mr Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Nadhim Zahawi, a junior minister in the Department for Education, said the Prime Minister intended to renegotiate.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46510636\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images The pound has fallen to an 18-month low against the dollar amid mounting uncertainty about the terms of the UK&#8217;s exit from the EU.
