{"id":4998,"date":"2018-12-01T13:20:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-01T13:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/kent-police-stop-using-crime-predicting-software\/"},"modified":"2018-12-01T13:20:40","modified_gmt":"2018-12-01T13:20:40","slug":"kent-police-stop-using-crime-predicting-software","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/kent-police-stop-using-crime-predicting-software\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent Police stop using crime predicting software"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Predictive Policing in LA\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/media\/images\/82665000\/jpg\/_82665198_predpol.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    The predictive policing software was pioneered in Los Angeles<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Computer software intended to predict where and when crimes would occur has been scrapped by a police force. <\/p>\n<p>Kent Police was the first force in England and Wales to introduce the &#8220;predictive policing&#8221; system in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Supt John Phillips said it was &#8220;challenging&#8221; to demonstrate whether the system had enabled police to reduce crime.  <\/p>\n<p>Officers said the software had been &#8220;really useful&#8221; for &#8220;proactive&#8221; policing. <\/p>\n<p>The software, created by US firm PredPol, was introduced across the county in April 2013 after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-kent-23689715\" class=\"story-body__link\">four-month trial in Medway saw street violence fall by 6%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It uses past trends and current information to predict when and where crime is likely to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Crime increased in the first year of its use, although police admitted at the time this was because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-kent-32529731\" class=\"story-body__link\">officers did not know how to use the software<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Really useful&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Kent Police Federation chairman Chris Carter said the software was useful for &#8220;proactive&#8221; policing, but said &#8220;officers have got less time to use it&#8221; due to increasing crime and decreasing resources. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was a neighbourhood inspector it was really useful to me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We deployed based on the information I was given from the system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Supt Phillips said the software &#8220;allowed officers to identify public spaces that would benefit from patrols&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While it did not predict crime, it was used as a preventative tool and supported the force&#8217;s focus at the time on neighbourhood policing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The launch of a new policing model that places victims and witnesses at its centre, has led Kent Police to evaluate alternative options which will support a focus on both traditional and emerging crime types.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Supt Phillips told the Financial Times the software had a &#8220;good record of predicting where crimes are likely to take place,&#8221; but added: &#8220;What is more challenging is to show that we have been able to reduce crime with that information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Predpol chief executive Brian MacDonald said he viewed Kent Police as a &#8220;customer on pause&#8221; and not a &#8220;lost customer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-kent-46345717\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image caption The predictive policing software was pioneered in Los Angeles Computer software intended to predict where and when crimes would occur has been scrapped by a police force.
