{"id":4774,"date":"2018-11-26T13:21:19","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T13:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/new-50-note-scientist-nominations-released\/"},"modified":"2018-11-26T13:21:19","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T13:21:19","slug":"new-50-note-scientist-nominations-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/new-50-note-scientist-nominations-released\/","title":{"rendered":"New \u00a350 note scientist nominations released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Bank of England banknote nomination advert\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/6E04\/production\/_104146182_scientist_boe.png\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Bank of England<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Bank of England has released a list of scientists who have been nominated to feature on the new \u00a350 note.<\/p>\n<p>On the list are computing pioneers Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace, telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell and astronomer Patrick Moore.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank received 174,112 nominations, of which 114,000 met the eligibility criteria. <\/p>\n<p>To be on the list, the individual must be real, deceased and have contributed to the field of science in the UK. <\/p>\n<p>The list, which includes more than 600 men and almost 200 women, includes black holes expert Stephen Hawking, penicillin discoverer Alexander Fleming, father of modern epidemiology John Snow, naturalist and zookeeper Gerald Durrell, fossil pioneer Mary Anning, British-Jamaican business woman and nursing pioneer Mary Seacole and Margaret Thatcher, who was a scientist before becoming British Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Bookmakers William Hill have Stephen Hawking as the current favourite, with odds of 7\/4, followed by Nobel-prize winning chemist Dorothy Hodgkin 4\/1.<\/p>\n<p>Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, Alexander Fleming and electromagnetic pioneer Michael Faraday have odds of 5\/1 and Rosalind Franklin, who made important contributions to the understanding of DNA, is at 6\/1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.keysurvey.co.uk\/f\/1348443\/10fc\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Further names will be considered<\/a> up until nominations close on 14 December. <\/p>\n<p>After that the decision will be considered by the Bank&#8217;s Banknote Character Advisory Committee. <\/p>\n<p>Nominations can include anyone who worked in any field of science including astronomy, biology, bio-technology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medical research, physics, technology or zoology.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 330 million \u00a350 notes in circulation, with a combined value of \u00a316.5bn, the Bank said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46343965\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Bank of England The Bank of England has released a list of scientists who have been nominated to feature on the new \u00a350 note.
