{"id":4675,"date":"2018-11-22T22:39:14","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T22:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/facebook-ads-urge-its-staff-to-leak-secrets\/"},"modified":"2018-11-22T22:39:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T22:39:14","slug":"facebook-ads-urge-its-staff-to-leak-secrets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/facebook-ads-urge-its-staff-to-leak-secrets\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook ads urge its staff to leak secrets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Leaky Facebook\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/5C1E\/production\/_104428532_ecc7857a-8b0e-4252-86f0-d0c4471d6663.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images\/BBC<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A campaign group advocating the break-up of Facebook has subverted the social network&#8217;s advertising tools to tempt its employees into leaking information.<\/p>\n<p>Freedom from Facebook says it targeted ads at the technology company&#8217;s staff, promoting a &#8220;safe space&#8221; website where they can anonymously submit &#8220;whistleblower tips&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook declined to comment. <\/p>\n<p>But the BBC understands it is not blocking the ads nor keeping a special log of who has viewed them.<\/p>\n<p>The stunt comes a week after the New York Times revealed that a public-relations company used by Facebook had circulated claims that the controversial billionaire George Soros was the hidden backer of the Freedom from Facebook campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Soros&#8217;s Open Society Foundations subsequently accused Facebook of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenSociety\/status\/1062900757081583617\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">conducting a &#8220;smear campaign&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, and chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, have since said they were unaware of the effort and have ended their contract with Definers, the PR company involved. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Mr Soros is a popular target of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, a leaked internal memo from Facebook&#8217;s departing communications chief, Elliot Schrage, has since acknowledged he was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the &#8216;Freedom from Facebook&#8217; campaign emerged as a so-called grassroots coalition, [our communications] team asked Definers to help understand the groups behind them,&#8221; the memo &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/11\/20\/schrage-definers\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">made public by the Techcrunch news site<\/a> &#8211; states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They learned that George Soros was funding several of the coalition members. They prepared documents and distributed these to the press to show that this was not simply a spontaneous grassroots movement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Responsibility for these decisions rests with leadership of the communications team. That&#8217;s me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Schrage&#8217;s duties are being taken on by the UK&#8217;s former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who has been charged with carrying out a wider review of Facebook&#8217;s lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Mr Zuckerberg gave an interview to CNN in which he said <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/20\/tech\/mark-zuckerberg-interview-sheryl-sandberg\/index.html\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">he did not see the need to step down from being chairman<\/a> and hoped that he would work together with Ms Sandberg for &#8220;decades more to come&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Micro-targeted ads<\/h2>\n<p>Facebook used to have a reputation for having few leaks but that has changed over recent months following the Cambridge Analytica affair and other scandals.<\/p>\n<p>One leak &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-morale-takes-a-tumble-along-with-stock-price-1542200400\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">recently reported by the Wall Street Journal<\/a> &#8211; revealed that an internal survey by Facebook&#8217;s human resources team had flagged a sharp drop in the percentage of workers who said they were optimistic about its future.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Facebook<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Facebook allows adverts to be targeted at employees of specific companies, including itself<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although Freedom from Facebook has not revealed how it has gone about micro-targeting the workers, there is an option in the company&#8217;s ad tool to direct a campaign at those who list their employer as Facebook HQ.<\/p>\n<p>It says that close to 89,000 people have done so.<\/p>\n<p>Another alternative would be to use a list of known email addresses belonging to Facebook workers.<\/p>\n<p>The move adds to pressure on the company at a time when it is having to deal with a growing number of controversies.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days alone:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">technical problems temporarily blocked some US and European users having access to their accounts and on Tuesday prevented advertisers launching or making changes to campaigns during the busy run-up to Black Friday<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">there has been a spike in the number of members requesting a download of all the data Facebook holds on them. The company has blamed this for delays to processing the submissions. News site Recode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2018\/11\/20\/18105541\/facebook-user-data-request-download-delays-high-volume\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">suggested this might indicate rising numbers of people<\/a> are planning to quit Facebook&#8217;s platforms<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">campaigners have criticised it for failing to prevent a 16-year-old girl being sold for marriage in South Sudan via its platform. Facebook did not remove the post involved until more than a fortnight after the sale began despite it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/south-sudan-girl-auctioned-facebook-marriage\/4647261.html\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">being reported in the press in the interim<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">there has been a growing backlash against <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/facebook\/2018\/11\/20\/if-facebooks-new-auto-comment-feature-isnt-rock-bottom-it-has-to-be-close\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">a new auto-comment feature that was found to be prompting users<\/a> to post comments such as &#8220;this is so sad&#8221; and &#8220;heartbreaking&#8221; and prayer-hands emojis in response to reports of a mass shooting in the US.
