has warned.<\/p>\n<p>It said firms would need to install 30 smart meters a minute, every day, for the next two years to replace the 46 million existing meters.<\/p>\n<p>At present, large energy suppliers are only putting in 9.7 meters a minute. <\/p>\n<p>Smart Energy GB said suppliers &#8220;are working hard to offer all households smart meters as soon as possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-44911635\/smart-meter-roll-out-in-bit-of-a-mess-says-mp\" class=\"story-body__link\">Watch: Smart meter roll out in a bit of a mess, says MP<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-44903471\" class=\"story-body__link\">Smart meters &#8216;to cut energy bills by just \u00a311&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A spokesman for the independent body which is responsible for promoting the scheme, added: &#8220;In line with the government&#8217;s figures, smart meters will help people save on average almost \u00a350 a year on their energy bills by 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Massively delayed&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>But Alex Neill, managing director of home products and services at Which?, said: &#8220;The smart meter rollout has been plagued by problems and been massively delayed, the benefits have been overstated and the savings they could bring consumers are at risk.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;Therefore it&#8217;s time for the Government to replan with industry and consumer groups to ensure people get the maximum benefit at the minimum cost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So far, large suppliers &#8211; that are defined by Which? as those with 250,000 customers or more &#8211; have installed 11 million smart meters, which show people how much energy they are using and the cost in pounds and pence. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said: &#8220;The government is committed to all households and small businesses in Great Britain being offered smart meters by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suppliers are ramping up their operations over the next 12 months as they recruit and train even more installers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                 <span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Smart Energy GB<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    TV chef Ainsley Harriott is working with Smart Energy GB to show the benefits of smart meters<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In July, the cross-party British Infrastructure Group said it believed that the 2020 target for the \u00a311bn roll-out would be missed and questioned &#8220;whether the programme will even deliver meaningful returns for consumers at all&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The following month, Citizens Advice advised that the deadline should be extended to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>British Gas, which is owned by Centrica, said it had installed almost six million smart meters in homes across the UK. <\/p>\n<p>E.ON has installed 1.4 million smart meters an said it &#8220;firmly believe in the benefits they offer customers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for EDF Energy said: &#8220;We are on course to achieve our targets for 2018.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Npower said it had installed a total of 428,088 smart meters, &#8220;meeting targets agreed with Ofgem&#8221;, the energy regulator.<\/p>\n<p>OVO Energy said over half its 860,000 retail customers have had a smart meter installed.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Power and SSE were unavailable for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46252933\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Large energy suppliers will need to triple the number of smart meters they are installing to meet a 2020 deadline, consumer group Which?
