{"id":4432,"date":"2018-11-16T06:21:02","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T06:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/japan-airlines-tightens-alcohol-rules-for-pilots\/"},"modified":"2018-11-16T06:21:02","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T06:21:02","slug":"japan-airlines-tightens-alcohol-rules-for-pilots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/japan-airlines-tightens-alcohol-rules-for-pilots\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan Airlines tightens alcohol rules for pilots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"JAL's airplane is seen at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan Feburuary 9, 2018.\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/3C4C\/production\/_104363451_gettyimages-916178912.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Japan Airlines will introduce a new breathalyser system at overseas airports after one of its pilots was arrested at Heathrow Airport for being drunk.<\/p>\n<p>Katsutoshi Jitsukawa was arrested last month after a test showed he was over nine times the legal alcohol limit.<\/p>\n<p>The new measures also come after a series of Japan Airlines flights were delayed due to intoxicated pilots. <\/p>\n<p>Japanese law does not set limits for alcohol consumption by pilots.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it is up to airlines to determine alcohol limits for pilots on duty. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Jitsukawa was arrested after he was found to have 189mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system &#8211; the legal limit for a pilot in the UK is 20mg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The company takes this violation seriously, as safety remains our utmost priority, and sincerely apologizes to all affected by the employee&#8217;s actions,&#8221; Japan Airlines said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Since August 2017, there have been 19 cases where Japan Airlines pilots have failed the company&#8217;s alcohol tests, a spokesperson for the firm said.  <\/p>\n<p>Twelve of these flights were delayed as a result, with the remaining three operating on time because alternative crew members were found. <\/p>\n<p>Japan Airlines will implement a series of measures as a result of the recent breaches.<\/p>\n<p>These include new breathalyser systems at overseas airports and introducing penalties &#8220;for flight crew violating the regulated alcohol concentration level&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>The new systems are already in place at Heathrow and domestic airports in Japan, the spokesperson said. <\/p>\n<p>They will be introduced at other airports on 19 November. <\/p>\n<p>Pilots will also be prohibited from consuming alcohol in the 24 hours prior to reporting for a flight from Japan, the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>Other airlines have also had recent trouble with intoxicated pilots. <\/p>\n<p>A British Airways <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-sussex-44451094\" class=\"story-body__link\"> pilot who turned up for work after drinking three double vodkas<\/a> was jailed earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>In India, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-46177980\" class=\"story-body__link\">a pilot was also recently barred from flying for three years<\/a> after he failed an alcohol test.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46231780\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Japan Airlines will introduce a new breathalyser system at overseas airports after one of its pilots was arrested at Heathrow Airport for being drunk.
