{"id":4197,"date":"2018-11-09T12:47:56","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T12:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/supermarkets-win-300m-cash-machine-case\/"},"modified":"2018-11-09T12:47:56","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T12:47:56","slug":"supermarkets-win-300m-cash-machine-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/supermarkets-win-300m-cash-machine-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Supermarkets win \u00a3300m cash machine case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"cash machines outside Tesco\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/2D0E\/production\/_104243511_gettyimages-621617660-1.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Retailers will no longer have to pay millions of pounds in business rates for cash machines outside their shops, following a ruling by the Appeal Court.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2010 supermarkets and convenience stores have been liable to pay rates on the machines.<\/p>\n<p>But the court ruled that about \u00a3300m they have already been charged will now have to be refunded.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that money will have to come from the government, and part from local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The shops that will immediately benefit include Sainsbury&#8217;s and Tesco, which had taken the case to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The court also decided that The Valuation Office &#8211; which brought the original case &#8211; should not be allowed to appeal to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>However the Valuation Office can still petition the Supreme Court should it wish to do so.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45483637\" class=\"story-body__link\">Cash machines close at record rate<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45483637\" class=\"story-body__link\">The High Streets with too many ATMs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Unfair system&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Tesco said it welcomed the judgement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recognise the vital role that ATMs play in the daily lives of our customers and remain committed to providing this service to them,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We welcome today&#8217;s result and the confirmation of our belief that ATMs should not be separately rateable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Co-Op said it was a victory for people who rely on ATMs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The case had threatened the viability of the ATM network, and risked the future of much-needed banking services across communities,&#8221; a Co-Op spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>ATM operator Cardtronics was also involved in bringing the case.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Schurder, the head of business rates at Gerald Eve, which represented Cardtronics, said: &#8220;Retailers with ATMs within their properties will be extremely pleased at a decision that will lead to both refunds for previous payments backdated as far as April 2010 and reductions to future bills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The UK&#8217;s High Street is under enormous pressure from all directions, and a big part of this has been the unfair nature of the business rates system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46151407\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Retailers will no longer have to pay millions of pounds in business rates for cash machines outside their shops, following a ruling by the Appeal Court.
