{"id":4174,"date":"2018-11-08T23:17:38","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T23:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/energy-firms-sse-and-npower-renegotiate-terms-of-merger\/"},"modified":"2018-11-08T23:17:38","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T23:17:38","slug":"energy-firms-sse-and-npower-renegotiate-terms-of-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/energy-firms-sse-and-npower-renegotiate-terms-of-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy firms SSE and Npower renegotiate terms of merger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Close up of woman's hand setting temperature control on oven.\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/CDD6\/production\/_97149625_gettyimages-469777200.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Energy firms SSE and Npower are renegotiating the terms of a merger of their UK retail operations, blaming the introduction of an energy price cap.<\/p>\n<p>The merger, which has been cleared by the regulator, is set to create the UK&#8217;s second-biggest energy company.<\/p>\n<p>Both firms said they still thought the merger had benefits, but that any final deal was likely to be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>An energy bill price cap of \u00a31,137 a year for &#8220;typical usage&#8221; is due to come into force in the new year.<\/p>\n<p>It means suppliers will have to cut the price of their default tariffs to the level of the cap or below it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46107733\" class=\"story-body__link\">Energy bills to be capped in new year<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-business-45810284\" class=\"story-body__link\">Watchdog clears SSE-Npower merger<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45422218\" class=\"story-body__link\">Households to benefit from energy price cap<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The government introduced legislation earlier this year to establish the price cap following concerns about how efficiently the energy market was working.<\/p>\n<p>In September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45494154\" class=\"story-body__link\">SSE said the cap would lead to &#8220;significantly lower&#8221; profits<\/a> than it had expected at the start of the financial year in its retail arm.<\/p>\n<p>The energy firm said it had become apparent that the impact of some &#8220;recent market developments&#8221;, including the price cap, meant that the &#8220;commercial terms associated with the proposed combination will need to be reconsidered&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, SSE and Npower&#8217;s German owner Innogy were in talks &#8220;regarding potential changes&#8221; to the commercial terms of the deal, it added. <\/p>\n<p>SSE chief executive Alistair Phillips-Davies said: &#8220;We continue to believe that creating a new, independent energy supplier has the potential to deliver real benefits for customers and the market as a whole, and that remains our objective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Talks will take place over several weeks, with an update on progress in mid-December. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Adverse developments&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The two companies were aiming to complete the merger &#8211; which would cut the &#8220;Big Six&#8221; energy firms down to five &#8211; in the first quarter of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, SSE said it was now not likely to be done by then. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.innogy.com\/en\/terms-of-the-proposed-transaction-to-combine-innogys-and-sses-retail-businesses-in-great-britain-require-adjustments\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Innogy said in a statement<\/a> that &#8220;adverse developments in the UK retail market and regulatory interventions such as the price cap have had a significant impact on the outlook for the combined retail company&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It said the negotiations would include talks about &#8220;potential additional direct or indirect financial contributions by each party&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, energy regulator, Ofgem said the cap would save 11 million customers an average of \u00a376 a year on their gas and electricity bills.<\/p>\n<p>Households in England, Scotland and Wales on default tariffs &#8211; such as standard variable tariffs &#8211; stand to benefit.
