who is retail mogul Sir Philip Green?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Sir Philip Green has said it was &#8220;outrageous&#8221; for Lord Hain to name him as the man who prevented the Telegraph publishing allegations of sexual and racial harassment.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Labour peer also failed to disclose his financial links to the law firm representing the newspaper. <\/p>\n<p>Sir Philip has denied the allegations and said he would lodge a formal complaint with the House of Lords. <\/p>\n<p>Lord Hain insisted naming the retail tycoon was in the public interest. <\/p>\n<p>He has also &#8220;categorically&#8221; denied that he was aware of law firm Gordon Dadd&#8217;s work with the Telegraph and said the firm played &#8220;absolutely no part&#8221; in his decision to name Sir Philip.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the BBC, Sir Philip said: &#8220;As many people have said, Lord Hain&#8217;s blatant disregard of a judgement made by three senior judges is outrageous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Why is Sir Philip Green in the news?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The tycoon has been the centre of an eight-month investigation by the Daily Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>The paper says that former employees of Sir Philip have accused him of sexual and racial harassment. <\/p>\n<p>But the Court of Appeal granted Sir Philip an injunction, preventing the paper from naming him.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45981436\" class=\"story-body__link\">Sir Philip named over harassment claims<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Wednesday the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/10\/23\/british-metoo-scandal-cannot-revealed\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Telegraph reported &#8220;a leading businessman&#8221; was granted an injunction.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The paper said interviews with five members of staff revealed that victims had been paid &#8220;substantial sums&#8221; in return for legal commitments not to discuss their alleged experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Philip has &#8220;categorically and wholly&#8221; denied allegations of &#8220;unlawful sexual or racist behaviour&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Why was he named in Parliament?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"player-with-placeholder\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-placeholder player-with-placeholder__image narrative-video-placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p06pvb7x.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Media playback is unsupported on your device<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"media-with-caption__caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Media caption<\/span>Lord Hain said the details were &#8220;clearly in the public interest&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the press were gagged, MPs and peers are protected from being prosecuted over statements made in the Commons or Lords under Parliamentary privilege. <\/p>\n<p>Labour peer Lord Hain identified the Topshop boss in the Lords on Thursday, saying he felt it was his duty to do so because &#8220;it was in the public interest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph and the media at large were then entitled to report Lord Hain&#8217;s statement in Parliament, even though the injunction had been issued by the courts. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-45987084\" class=\"story-body__link\">Lord Hain defends naming Sir Philip<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lord Hain was criticised by some Parliamentarians over his decision to flout the court&#8217;s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Former Lord Chief Justice Baron Judge said: &#8220;The consequences are so serious.
