{"id":3564,"date":"2018-10-24T07:21:04","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/barclays-profits-rise-in-third-quarter\/"},"modified":"2018-10-24T07:21:04","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:21:04","slug":"barclays-profits-rise-in-third-quarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/barclays-profits-rise-in-third-quarter\/","title":{"rendered":"Barclays profits rise in third quarter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Barclays Bank\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/8052\/production\/_104005823_020c82db-2544-458e-a77e-0b6142a8390c.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Profits at Barclays surged in the third quarter as the lender&#8217;s investment banking and retail divisions picked up speed.<\/p>\n<p>The lender posted \u00a31.5bn in profit before tax for the three months to 30 September, up from \u00a31.1bn a year ago. <\/p>\n<p>Net operating income was \u00a34.9bn, up from \u00a34.7bn. <\/p>\n<p>The results are likely to ease pressure on the bank, which has faced calls to shrink its investment bank and focus on retail banking instead. <\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Jes Staley said: &#8220;In spite of macro-economic uncertainty, and particularly concerns over Brexit which weigh heavily on market sentiment, 2018 is proving to be a year of delivery on our strategy at Barclays.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remain focused on generating improved returns, and on distributing a greater proportion of excess capital to shareholders over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a hard year for the bank, whose profits were hit by litigation costs and settlements in the first half.<\/p>\n<p>Sherborne, an investment firm known for shaking up companies, has also been pushing for higher returns from the investment bank and bigger payouts for shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the third quarter, Barclays&#8217; markets trading business grew by 19% to \u00a31.2bn, suggesting boss Jes Staley&#8217;s strategy for the division is working. <\/p>\n<p>Bond, currency and commodity trading activities also grew, from \u00a3627m to \u00a3688m.<\/p>\n<p>Barclay&#8217;s profit figures exclude costs from litigation and fines for misconduct, which have blighted the bank in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays group profits for the first nine months of the year fell in comparison with the same period last year, as it booked a \u00a31.4bn settlement in the US over mis-selling financial products before 2008. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45962975\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Profits at Barclays surged in the third quarter as the lender&#8217;s investment banking and retail divisions picked up speed.
