{"id":3480,"date":"2018-10-22T09:25:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T09:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/dr-martens-profits-march-forward\/"},"modified":"2018-10-22T09:25:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-22T09:25:50","slug":"dr-martens-profits-march-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/dr-martens-profits-march-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Martens&#8217; profits march forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Dr Marten boots\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/A901\/production\/_103956234_docs.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Kirstin Sinclair<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Strong sales in Europe and the Middle East have boosted profits at UK footwear firm Dr Martens.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings grew 33% to \u00a350m in the year to March, with sales up 20% to \u00a3348.6m.<\/p>\n<p>The Northamptonshire-based company, most famous for its distinctive boots, said it had seen double-digit growth in revenues and profits in all regions. <\/p>\n<p>It started production in Northampton in 1960, and although most of its boots are now made overseas about 70,000 a year are still made at the UK factory.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Martens makes more than half of its revenues from its most recognisable product, the 1460 boot and sister product the 1461 shoe.<\/p>\n<p>The company said 40% of its revenues came from selling direct to consumers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Scope for growth&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Over the year the company, which is owned by private equity firm Permira, opened 25 new stores, including nine in the UK, giving it a total of 94 owned stores worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it had &#8220;spotted&#8221; a number of high-profile people sporting its wares, including David and Brooklyn Beckham, Kanye West, Pharrel Williams and Cardi B.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Mason, chairman of Dr. Martens, said: &#8220;This has been a fantastic year for Dr. Martens.&#8221; He said there was still &#8220;significant scope for growth across our markets, particularly via our Direct to Consumer channels, and this will remain a strategic priority in the years ahead&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the past year the company appointed a new chief executive, Kenny Wilson, whose previous job was at the retro-style homeware and fashion brand, Kath Kidston. <\/p>\n<p>Dr Martens&#8217; air-cushioned sole was developed by Munich-based Dr Maertens and Dr Funck and the UK patent rights were sold to R Griggs Group. <\/p>\n<p>The footwear that emerged from their collaboration was initially sold as a work boot, but was taken up by the early skinhead youth movement of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>The boots also become popular with punks in the 1970s and had a resurgence when Britpop emerged in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45938486\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Kirstin Sinclair Strong sales in Europe and the Middle East have boosted profits at UK footwear firm Dr Martens.
