{"id":3305,"date":"2018-10-16T19:36:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T19:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/walmart-rises-despite-lower-profit-forecast\/"},"modified":"2018-10-16T19:36:02","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T19:36:02","slug":"walmart-rises-despite-lower-profit-forecast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/walmart-rises-despite-lower-profit-forecast\/","title":{"rendered":"Walmart rises despite lower profit forecast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Shoppers wait in line to pay for their purchases at a Walmart store in Los Angeles, California on November 24, 2009,\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/D3D5\/production\/_103892245_walmart.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Walmart is asking Wall Street to wait for profit growth as it battles to retain its place as the world&#8217;s largest retailer.<\/p>\n<p>The US discount chain has been buying up smaller companies, investing in India and spending on new technology.<\/p>\n<p>But the investments come at a cost.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the firm warned that profits per share would decline slightly next year, largely because of losses at its Indian e-commerce unit Flipkart.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the caution, the firm&#8217;s shares rose by nearly 2%, offering a vote of confidence in Walmart&#8217;s efforts to remake its business.<\/p>\n<p>Executives outlined plans to investors at an annual meeting on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>They said they were looking at everything from introducing more robots to cut costs to expanding revenue by monetising customer data.<\/p>\n<p>In its stores, Walmart is expanding offerings in categories with strong sales, such as wine and toys.<\/p>\n<p>Online, executives said they wanted to improve services such as same-day delivery and increase the number of products available.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like the direction we&#8217;re heading, but it&#8217;s not going to happen overnight,&#8221; said Marc Lore, chief executive of Walmart&#8217;s US e-commerce unit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Leaning long-term<\/h2>\n<p>Walmart has already been on a shopping spree, purchasing online shopping site Jet.com, as well as brands such as Bonobos and Bare Necessities to strengthen its digital muscle.<\/p>\n<p>It spent $16bn (\u00a312.1bn) this year to acquire a majority stake in Flipkart, an Indian e-commerce company.<\/p>\n<p>Executives said they believed that Flipkart will turn profitable eventually, but conceded that the investment, as well as others it is making, would be costly in the short-term.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to be positioned to have a business that&#8217;s large and growing for the long term,&#8221; said chief executive Doug McMillon. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m trying to balance short-term and long-term but if you force me to choose, I&#8217;d lean long-term.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Sales forecast<\/h2>\n<p>The firm expects sales to increase by at least 3% in its next financial year, excluding fluctuations due to currency changes.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, the firm expects sales growth of 2.5% to 3%, helped by a 35% surge in online shopping.<\/p>\n<p>However, profits are expected to decline in the low single digits.
