\u00a33.8bn) fine for allegedly using the Android operating system to &#8220;cement its dominance&#8221; as a search engine.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the European Commission said Google&#8217;s Android policies had &#8220;denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The company could face further fines if it does not change its practices.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s appeal could take several years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have now filed our appeal,&#8221; the company said in a statement reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/37b9159e-cc0e-11e8-b276-b9069bde0956\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What was Google accused of?<\/h2>\n<p>Google was accused of acting illegally because:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">it required Android handset and tablet manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and its own web browser Chrome as a condition for allowing them to offer access to its Play app store<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">it made payments to large manufacturers and mobile network operators so that they agreed to exclusively pre-install the Google Search app on their devices<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">it prevented manufacturers from selling any smart devices powered by alternative &#8220;forked&#8221; she said in July.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">How has Google responded?<\/h2>\n<p>Following the fine, Google chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said Android had enabled &#8220;rapid innovation, wide choice, and falling prices&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the decision &#8220;rejects the business model that supports Android, which has created more choice for everyone, not less&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The company was given until the end of October to make changes to Android that would satisfy the EU&#8217;s demands.It told the Financial Times that it had no plans to ask the EU to change that deadline.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Google faced similar complaints from the Russian regulator.<\/p>\n<p>It now offers Android users in Russia a choice between Google, Yandex and Mail.ru as the default search engine the first time they use the Chrome browser.<\/p>\n<p>Yandex in particular appears to have benefited from this change.<\/p>\n<p>Since the change in June 2017, the Moscow-based company has seen its share of mobile search rise from about 34% to 46%, <a href=\"http:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\/mobile\/russian-federation\/#monthly-201706-201807\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">according to Statcounter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-45810059\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Google is fighting a record \u20ac4.3bn ($4.9bn;
