{"id":3142,"date":"2018-10-11T14:09:59","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T14:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/apple-hires-engineers-from-uk-company-dialog\/"},"modified":"2018-10-11T14:09:59","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T14:09:59","slug":"apple-hires-engineers-from-uk-company-dialog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/apple-hires-engineers-from-uk-company-dialog\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple hires engineers from UK company Dialog"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Apple products\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/EDC6\/production\/_103807806_29647a97-70d9-4516-8987-f130763fa3ab.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Apple uses Dialog&#8217;s chips in its iPhones, iPads and Watches<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Apple is adding 300 computer chip engineers to its team after striking a deal to hire them from one of its British suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>It is paying Dialog Semiconductor $300m (\u00a3227m) for the acquisition, which also includes some of the Reading-based company&#8217;s patents and facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has long used Dialog&#8217;s products to monitor and control power consumption in its iPhones and iPads.<\/p>\n<p>The deal represents one of Apple&#8217;s biggest takeovers in headcount terms. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dialog has deep expertise in chip development and we are thrilled to have this talented group of engineers who have long supported our products now working directly for Apple,&#8221; said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dialog-semiconductor.com\/sites\/default\/files\/press_release_10.10.18_final.pdf\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">handset-maker&#8217;s hardware technologies chief Johny Srouji<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Staff involved are based in:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Swindon<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Livorno, Italy<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Nabern, Germany<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Neuaubing, Germany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Californian company already designs its own computer processing units (CPUs) and last year announced it was ending a partnership with another UK company, Imagination Technologies, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-39476898\" class=\"story-body__link\">create its own in-house graphics processing units<\/a> (GPUs) too.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, rumours emerged that Apple also planned to phase out use of Dialog&#8217;s components, causing the supplier&#8217;s shares to tumble 20%.<\/p>\n<p>However, those fears appear to have been overstated since Apple has also announced it has pre-paid Dialog a further $300m to secure products from it over the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>One expert noted that Apple had a reputation for liking to be in control.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the industry this kind of move is known as being more vertically integrated,&#8221; said Ian Cutress, senior editor at the engineering-focused news site AnandTech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something that&#8217;s already true of Samsung and its smartphones &#8211; for example it also makes its own displays.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The benefits for Apple having full control at the component level should be lower overheads and therefore reduced costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But a downside could be there&#8217;s less fallback if something goes wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dialog said it expected the deal would be completed within the first six months of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The firm&#8217;s chief executive told the BBC that he hoped his company&#8217;s relationship with Apple would continue beyond 2021, but that the arrangement gave Dialog time to become less dependant on the US tech giant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us to change in any other way would be more painful,&#8221; said Dr Jalal Bagherli.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They wanted to create their own solutions in-house. And we could accelerate that, but in the process monetise some of our intellectual property assets and also find a home for many of our employees in a good company &#8211; I think it&#8217;s a win-win situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over recent years, the UK&#8217;s best known computer chip designer ARM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-36822806\" class=\"story-body__link\">was sold to Japan&#8217;s Softbank fund<\/a>, and Imagination Technologies was purchased by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-41369376\" class=\"story-body__link\">China-backed investment firm Canyon Bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all this, Dr Jalal said the industry was still &#8220;very healthy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The level of education and expertise in silicon and semiconductor design is high,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is why you have a high demand from overseas for this talent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s something we can invest in more in this country because there&#8217;s clearly demand from abroad to access this. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For every purchase, that money can be released back into the economy to invest more in the sector.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Dialog&#8217;s shares were trading about 24% above their opening price by mid-afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-45821600\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Apple uses Dialog&#8217;s chips in its iPhones, iPads and Watches Apple is adding 300 computer chip engineers to its team after striking a deal to hire them from one of its British suppliers.
