saying the government is &#8220;on the side of &#8220;hard-working families&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs May will tell the Conservative conference: &#8220;They are the people for whom this party must deliver.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A car is a necessity &#8220;not a luxury&#8221; for millions of people, she will add.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Chancellor Philip Hammond said the policy saved drivers money, but would cost the Treasury \u00a338bn if it continued for another three years.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What is fuel duty?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A tax on fuel &#8211; currently 57.95p per litre of petrol, diesel, biodiesel, and bioethanol<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">VAT of 20% is also charged on most fuel<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Fuel duty is <a href=\"http:\/\/obr.uk\/forecasts-in-depth\/tax-by-tax-spend-by-spend\/fuel-duties\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">expected to raise \u00a328.2bn<\/a> for the government in 2018-19<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\"\/>\n<p>The Green Party has criticised previous freezes, saying the extra money could be spent on public transport, walking, and cycling.<\/p>\n<p>But AA president Edmund King said the freeze would bring relief to millions of UK drivers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The high pump prices are already forcing many families to cut back on journeys, household expenditure or both,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The average UK petrol price is currently 130.6p per litre, while diesel is 134.5p.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 12 months, average petrol prices have gone up by 11.5p a litre, with diesel up by 14p a litre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.racfoundation.org\/data\/taxation-as-percentage-of-pump-price-data-page\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">According to the RAC Foundation<\/a>, 61% of the price of petrol and nearly 60% of the price of diesel is taxation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mrs May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-45725615\" class=\"story-body__link\">will close the Conservative conference<\/a> by declaring Britain&#8217;s post-Brexit future is &#8220;full of promise&#8221; and vowing the &#8220;best days lie ahead of us&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And, in confirming the fuel duty freeze, she will say the difference having a &#8220;little bit of money left to put away at the end of the month&#8221;
