{"id":2681,"date":"2018-09-29T09:40:39","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T09:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/bbc-music-website-offers-dementia-lifeline\/"},"modified":"2018-09-29T09:40:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T09:40:39","slug":"bbc-music-website-offers-dementia-lifeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/bbc-music-website-offers-dementia-lifeline\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Music website offers dementia lifeline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Clockwise from top left: Petula Clark, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Billie Holiday, Elton John, Nat King Cole\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/25A8\/production\/_103604690_comp.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">BBC\/PA\/Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Music&#8217;s ability to soothe the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer&#8217;s has been known for years.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a new BBC website aims to help by connecting dementia patients with the songs they love.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, it&#8217;s hoped the site will build a database of music that&#8217;s effective at triggering memories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Music can have such a powerful effect,&#8221; said Snow Patrol star Gary Lightbody, whose father suffers from dementia. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It fires all sorts of things in the brain much more immediately than anything else can, whether it be pictures or old home movies or conversations. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Music can somehow take you to a place of your youth, or an important part of your life you may not otherwise have access to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S217358081730072X\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">music therapy has been shown to alleviate depression<\/a>, anxiety, hallucinations and mobility problems in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"player-with-placeholder\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-placeholder player-with-placeholder__image narrative-video-placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p06m8z3g.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Media playback is unsupported on your device<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"media-with-caption__caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Media caption<\/span>How music therapy can help the brain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yet research shows only 5% of care homes in the UK provide good quality music programmes.<\/p>\n<p>That equates to &#8220;30 seconds per week per person with dementia&#8221;, according to research from the International Longevity Centre.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s one of the reasons why the charity Playlist for Life has collaborated with the BBC on <a href=\"https:\/\/musicmemories.bbcrewind.co.uk\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">the Music Memories website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The site &#8211; which launched on Friday as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/events\/egrz3d\" class=\"story-body__link\">BBC Music Day<\/a> &#8211; allows people to browse more than 1,800 songs, classical works and TV theme tunes from the last 100 years, creating a playlist of personally meaningful music.<\/p>\n<p>Those playlists can then be shared &#8211; along with some basic information about the user&#8217;s age, gender and place of birth &#8211; allowing carers to identify songs that could help others with a similar background.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    TV themes, such as The Wombles, can have just as powerful an effect on memory as hit songs<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The example we often give is that there&#8217;s a famous Scottish lullaby called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8uO9aeERILI\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Ally Bally Bee<\/a>,&#8221; said Sarah Metcalfe from Playlist for Life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most people in Glasgow have it on their playlist because it takes them back to their mum singing to them and feeling safe and loved. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But if you&#8217;re Glaswegian and you end up in a care home in Reading, the chances are nobody knows Ally Bally Bee. They&#8217;ve never even heard of it. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And if we can begin to connect up what people like in different parts of the country, we can actually begin to help reach people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Other BBC Music Day highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-45640193\" class=\"story-body__link\">Kylie Minogue&#8217;s railway announcements<\/a> are being played at major stations around the UK, while Amy Macdonald has performed at Glasgow Central station and Blossoms played at Manchester Piccadilly<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Jarvis Cocker and Happy Mondays star Bez took part in a special edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0blsjyx\" class=\"story-body__link\">Bargain Hunt on BBC One<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-45639433\" class=\"story-body__link\">Radio 4&#8217;s Woman&#8217;s Hour<\/a> has announced its Women in Music Power List<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">The Wombats will customise one of their hits for pre-schoolers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0blsx36\" class=\"story-body__link\">on CBBC at 17:00<\/a>, while George Ezra will read a bedtime story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episodes\/b00jdlm2\" class=\"story-body__link\">on the channel at 18:50<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/events\/egrz3d\/live\/c99xn3\" class=\"story-body__link\">Live coverage of the day&#8217;s events<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Memory bump&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>A psychological phenomenon known as the &#8220;memory bump&#8221; means the music we hear between the ages of 10 and 30, when we become independent, carries more emotional resonance than any other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So if you&#8217;ve got a relative with dementia, even if they can&#8217;t communicate with you any more, you can think back to when they would have been 10 to 30 years old, and use that as a key to unlock the kinds of music they might really enjoy, and it might have a lot of benefits for them,&#8221; said Sally Bowell from the International Longevity Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The science checks out,&#8221; Lightbody told the BBC. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The songs of my dad&#8217;s youth would be from the &#8217;50s, and when something comes on from that period he perks up a hell of a lot. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You put on some Frank Sinatra and he loves it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of music therapy in addressing dementia are still being explored, but there have already been some powerful results. <\/p>\n<p>At the Lillyburn Care Home near Glasgow, a music programme designed by Playlist For Life has led to a 60% reduction in the use of anti-psychotic medication.<\/p>\n<p>The number of people living with dementia in the UK expected to rise to 1.1 million by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Music therapy is addressing some of the toughest questions about how we, as a health service and as a care system, are going to look after people with this horrible condition,&#8221; Metcalfe told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The national dementia strategy has a priority of trying to reduce the use of anti-psychotics, and this is a really practical alternative. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not going to work in every situation.
