{"id":2679,"date":"2018-09-29T06:59:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T06:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/san-diego-port-hit-by-ransomware-attack\/"},"modified":"2018-09-29T06:59:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T06:59:40","slug":"san-diego-port-hit-by-ransomware-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/san-diego-port-hit-by-ransomware-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego port hit by ransomware attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Tourist boat\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/2DDD\/production\/_103614711_049599187-1.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Reuters<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    The Port of San Diego oversees 34 miles of coastline along the bay<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">San Diego&#8217;s port operator has been caught out by ransomware.<\/p>\n<p>The Port released a statement saying the malware had infiltrated its computer network and was disrupting administration systems.<\/p>\n<p>It said the attack had not stopped ships or boats using the port, or put members of the public in danger.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are helping the Port investigate and clean up in the wake of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is mainly an administrative issue and normal Port operations are continuing as usual,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofsandiego.org\/press-releases\/general-press-releases\/port-san-diego-releases-additional-information-cybersecurity\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">Randa Coniglio, chief executive of the port, said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The main impact would be on the issuing of park permits, public records requests and general business services, it added.<\/p>\n<p>The Port said some of the disruption was because of staff shutting down computers that were in danger of being compromised as the ransomware started to spread. <\/p>\n<p>The organisation did not say which malware was used in the attack but added that payment was being demanded in Bitcoins by the hackers behind the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The Port is just one of many shipping-related industries that have been hit by ransomware. <\/p>\n<p>In July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-44965163\" class=\"story-body__link\">the China Ocean Shipping Company&#8217;s terminal in Long Beach was briefly closed by a malware attack.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year, shipping giant Maersk was among the high profile victims of the NotPetya virus and said its business was affected for a couple of weeks.
