{"id":2394,"date":"2018-09-21T04:07:39","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T04:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/italy-opens-probe-into-ryanair-hand-luggage-charges\/"},"modified":"2018-09-21T04:07:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T04:07:39","slug":"italy-opens-probe-into-ryanair-hand-luggage-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/italy-opens-probe-into-ryanair-hand-luggage-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy opens probe into Ryanair hand luggage charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Plane\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/ECC4\/production\/_103521606_gettyimages-841723192.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Italy&#8217;s competition watchdog has opened a inquiry into Ryanair&#8217;s decision to charge people to take hand luggage on to the plane.<\/p>\n<p>Antitrust said hand luggage was &#8220;an essential element of transport&#8221; and should be included in the ticket price.<\/p>\n<p>From November, passengers will still be able to take a small personal bag into the cabin, as long as it fits under the seat in front.<\/p>\n<p>But they will have to pay \u20ac9 (\u00a38) to take on a 10kg (22lb) bag.<\/p>\n<p>Antitrust said Ryanair&#8217;s new policy could amount to unfair commercial practice in that it distorts the final price of the ticket and does not allow a true comparison with other airlines&#8217; prices.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45289432\" class=\"story-body__link\">Ryanair brings in new rules on cabin bags<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45585135\" class=\"story-body__link\">Ryanair boss may leave within five years<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Italian consumer associations had complained to Antitrust about the Ryanair decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If its unfair commercial practice on hand luggage is confirmed, Ryanair&#8230; should reimburse all its customers who suffer unfair additional costs,&#8221; the association Codacons said, promising to take the matter to court if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Ryanair said the policy was not aimed at making money but intended to &#8220;improve punctuality and reduce boarding gate delays&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, research by US travel consultancy IdeaWorks suggests the airline made \u00a31.7bn from charges for add-ons such as checked baggage and selected seats in the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>That meant almost a third of the company&#8217;s profits came from so-called &#8220;ancillary revenue&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Shareholder discontent<\/h2>\n<p>The Italian inquiry creates more bad publicity for the airline as it faces widespread strikes by staff across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Shareholders also delivered a blow to the airline on Thursday after many declined to vote for the re-election of the company&#8217;s chairman at its general meeting.<\/p>\n<p>David Bonderman was re-elected but only with 70.5% of shareholder&#8217;s support &#8211; a drop from last year&#8217;s meeting where he gained 89.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Aberdeen Standard Investments, which owns a 0.9% stake in the airline, said it wanted to see &#8220;clear progress&#8221; on the succession of Mr Bonderman and senior independent director Kyran Mclaughlin by this time next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The length of time both have been on the board suggests a lack of focus on board succession planning,&#8221; ASI said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Excessive tenure also calls into question an individual&#8217;s independence and objectivity and our engagement on governance matters suggests that the board is not listening carefully enough to shareholders&#8217; views.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-45595149\">Source<\/a> by <a href=\"\">[author_name]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Italy&#8217;s competition watchdog has opened a inquiry into Ryanair&#8217;s decision to charge people to take hand luggage on to the plane.
