{"id":2378,"date":"2018-09-20T18:12:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T18:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/evans-cycles-seeking-new-owner-amid-tough-trading-conditions\/"},"modified":"2018-09-20T18:12:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T18:12:40","slug":"evans-cycles-seeking-new-owner-amid-tough-trading-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.styledeals.co.uk\/blog\/evans-cycles-seeking-new-owner-amid-tough-trading-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Evans Cycles seeking new owner amid tough trading conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div property=\"articleBody\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Evans Cycles has 60 stores across the UK\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/6F2B\/production\/_99195482_evanscycles2.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"\/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><br \/>\n                 <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Evans Cycles<\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><br \/>\n                <span class=\"media-caption__text\"><br \/>\n                    Evans Cycles has 60 stores across the UK<br \/>\n                <\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Evans Cycles has put itself up for sale as it seeks fresh funding amid tough High Street trading conditions. <\/p>\n<p>The BBC understands PwC is in talks with a number of potential buyers for the bike store chain, which has more than 60 outlets in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The consultancy has asked for final bids by the end of next week, but Evans is not thought to be seeking a rescue deal. <\/p>\n<p>PwC declined to comment and Evans did not respond to requests for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Concerns over the retailer&#8217;s financial position first emerged in September, when Sky News reported the chain was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/bike-retailer-evans-cycles-in-talks-with-lenders-as-chain-struggles-11492689\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">seeking an emergency cash injection<\/a> from its lenders. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-44606771\" class=\"story-body__link\">Last Maplin stores close their doors<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/43399850\" class=\"story-body__link\">Toys R Us shops to close down <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like other retailers, Evans has struggled with the recent slowdown on Britain&#8217;s High Streets that has led to the demise of brands such as Maplins and Toys R Us. <\/p>\n<p>High Street cycling retailers also face mounting competition from online rivals such as Wiggles, which have eaten into their market share. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Press Association, Evans is thought to need at least \u00a310m to keep up with obligations over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is not thought to be considering a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) &#8211; a form of rescue deal that would allow it to shut stores and slash rents without going bust. <\/p>\n<p>The controversial insolvency process has been used recently by retailers such as New Look, Mothercare and Homebase.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Bumpy ride<\/h2>\n<p>Evans traces its history to 1921, when the first FW Evans Cycles shop opened in Kennington, south-east London.<\/p>\n<p>It was bought by private equity firm ECI Partners for \u00a380m in 2015, but has had a bumpy ride since then. <\/p>\n<p>In April, the chain sacked its chief executive Andy King amid reports he had failed to turn the business around. <\/p>\n<p>Mr King, who joined Evans in November 2016 amid profit slump, was replaced by Alan Fort &#8211; the firm&#8217;s third new boss in two years. <\/p>\n<p>According to Companies House, earnings at Evans&#8217; parent company, April Topco, fell from \u00a32.2m to \u00a32m in the year to 28 October 2017.
